As a school, our pupils are encouraged to
work hard and to play hard, and whilst we take pride in celebrating
their achievements, part of that pride is gained from seeing the pleasure
and satisfaction that they feel as individuals. Below are a few of
our successes over the past 12 months.

CHESS
Fourteen Prep children competed with Senior School
pupils recently for the first of what will become an annual Chess event.
Prep pupils from Years 3,4,5 and 6 won an incredibly close match - with 10 minutes
to go the Senior School (including 6th formers) were ahead by one point, but in the
end Prep children won 78 points to 75 points and took away the trophy. Fantastically well
done everyone

UK JUNIOR MATHS CHALLENGE 2003
Boys and girls in Year 6 worked
hard throughout the year on their mathematics. Not just the
Key Stage 2 work but something extra to enrich their mathematical
education. They had sessions on a regular basis where they were
presented with difficult problems and then challenged to work
out different strategies for answering those problems. And we
mean difficult! The Challenge is designed for Year 8 (13 year
old) pupils and even then it is for only the top performers
in the age group. Our pupils were tackling work of pupils 2/3
years older than themselves. Not every pupil is successful all
of the time, most struggle for some of the time, but they do
gain from the experience.
They sat the examination paper in April. Awards are given to
the top 40% of the entrants (6% Gold, 14% Silver and 20% Bronze),
so we were thrilled when 1 child achieved Gold, three achieved
Silver and 5 achieved Bronze.

In May 2004,
at the Redhill & Reigate Music Festival, our Junior Singers
from Years 2 and 3 were in the first class and came away with
an Honours certificate and the winner's shield. The Choir
were awarded an Outstanding certificate. Our BBC/Tour Choir
followed on and they too received an Outstanding commendation,
together with the winner's cup.

|
Also in May,
our BBC/Tour Choir performed brilliantly at the regional round
of the BBC Choir of the Year competition and we were thrilled
to hear that they were chosen to go forward to the National
Selection Stage of the competition when more adjudicators
will listen to the recordings of the choirs and select just
six choirs from the entire country to go through to the semi-finals
which take place next February.

Personal
Achievements
At Caterham we also like to reward
individual effort and achievement. From year One onwards we
run a Star scheme whereby pupils are awarded stars for excellent
work or behaviour. When pupils attain 25 stars during one term
they are entitled to wear a badge; 50 stars in one term is rewarded
by a pin badge while pupils gaining 75 or 100 stars receive
a certificate of commendation from the Head Teacher. All awards
are made in assembly in front of the school to celebrate the
achievements.
|
 |
|
| At the end of each School Year we also award
prizes to those who have excelled during the School year. Run as part
of Speech day, awards are given for effort and achievement in all
years - from Reception to Year Six. |

Charity
Pupils had a bumper charity fundraising
Christmas this year. The charity Operation Christmas Child collected
130 beautifully wrapped boxes from the school at the beginning of
November for delivery to Eastern Europe in time for Christmas.
Thanks to much hard work by parents and pupils, this year's Christmas
Fair raised over £2,500 for the Lisa Thaxter Trust, which was
boosted by collections made after the nativity performances of the
younger members of the school, aged between 5 and 6 years.
The children's hard work even continued after the term had finished,
when the school Choir travelled up to the Albert Hall to perform in
the Sargent Christmas Cracker concert in aid of Sargent Cancer Care.
Singing Christmas carols and songs in a 400 strong choir with 7 other
schools, they not only helped to contribute to the charity's £100,000
target for 2002, but enjoyed a fantastic experience, too.
