As a school, our pupils are encouraged to
work hard and to play hard, and whilst we take pride in celebrating
their achievements, part of that pride is gained from seeing the pleasure
and satisfaction that they feel as individuals. Below are a few of
our successes over the past 12 months.

CHESS

Prep children competed
once again with Senior School Sixth formers
recently. Pupils from Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 won many matches and lost
quite a few
too, but in the end
the Prep children won a resounding victory and
took away the trophy yet again! The trophy is now called the David
Green cup, after the wonderful coach pictured above who inspired many
of our Prep children, and who passed away recently. Fantastically
well done everyone.

UK JUNIOR MATHS CHALLENGE
The UKMT Maths Challenges
are lively, intriguing papers designed to stimulate interest
in maths in a large numbers of pupils nationally. The tests
are designed to test a pupil’s skills in reasoning and mental
agility The Junior Maths paper is aimed at pupils primarily
in Year 8 (age 14), and only at the top 35% of achieving

are awarded to 40% of participants nationally. Each academic
year the Set 1 Mathematics pupils in Year 6 participate in
the UK Junior Maths Challenge and this year, out of thirteen
children that took part, seven were awarded certificates.

CHOIR SUCCESSES
On a wonderful spring Saturday morning the choir took part in the Coulsdon and
Purley Music Festival. The standard of singing was amazingly high and all
the schools were commended for their musicality and freshness. However,
the adjudicator agreed with what all the Caterham supporters already knew
and declared Caterham Prep to be the best - the hard work and rehearsals
together with the children’s talent provided the school with another triumph!
In
May the Years 2 & 3 Junior Singers took part in
the Reigate and Redhill Music Festival, competing against
three other schools. Caterham sang
two songs beautifully; What Colour is the Wind? And Doh-Re-Me from the Sound
of Music. The standard of all the singing was very high and the adjudicator
said it was very difficult to choose the winner. However,
after she had praised the
performances of all the young choristers she relieved the suspense from the
burgundy area of the chapel by awarding the cup to Caterham
Prep. A week later we were
delighted to hear that our Junior Singers had also been awarded the Micklefield
Shield for attaining the highest overall score in the choral classes this year
at the Festival.

Music plays
a large part in Caterham life, and even those without
particular talent are encouraged to join in. In March
this year the annual Spring Concert took place, and every
single member of the school took part in some form, whether
it was in recorder groups, string groups, or dancing to
South African tribal songs. It was a wonderful experience
for the children and for the audience, and a huge tribute
to the musical ethos in the school.

BOYS SPORT
The boys have enjoyed an extremely busy and successful
autumn term on the football pitch playing over 90
matches, in which every boy in the Prep School has
represented the school at some point. Particular
highlights have included winning the Reigate U10
tournament, runners up in the U9 Caterham tournament,
and the U11s reached the semi-finals in the Caterham
U11 tournament. Although statistics cannot tell us
everything, an over 60% unbeaten percentage is something
the boys can be proud of.

|
GIRLS SPORT
In Netball, the Under 9 B team
won the St Michael's Under 9 Tournament, and the Under 11 girls
won the Laverock Tournament.
The Under 9s were also winners of the St Michael's Under 9 Poplacrosse
Festival.
The girls Swimming Team won the Tandridge District Gala.

PERSONAL
ACHIEVEMENTS
At Caterham we also like to reward
individual effort and achievement. From year One onwards we
run a Star scheme whereby pupils are awarded stars for excellent
work or behaviour. When pupils attain 25 stars during one term
they are entitled to wear a badge; 50 stars in one term is rewarded
by a pin badge while pupils gaining 75 or 100 stars receive
a certificate of commendation from the Head Teacher. All awards
are made in assembly in front of the school to celebrate the
achievements.

CHARITY
At harvest time the school
supported a local charity, the Redhill Family Centre.
Families generously donated non-perishable food to support
needy families in the area.
Year 5 children
decided to act as a year group and raise money through
the year for the charity ‘Send a Cow’. With cake sales
and a sponsored walk they managed to raise the magnificent
sum of £454 which paid for a pair of oxen, two sheep,
four rabbits + hutch, and 4 lots of 100 saplings!
In November, children wrapped and filled 120 shoe boxes to send to disadvantaged
children overseas. This year all the parcels were dispatched to Armenia.
