English
is considered essential in nurturing language ability. It is considered
as a subject in its own right as well as being used to develop understanding
in other subjects. Reading and literature play a specific role in developing
children’s patterns of language.
Through literature, children develop an understanding of people and their culture
and learn about themselves. Literature enables children to make sense of the world, to clarify and enhance
thoughts and feelings. Through narrative they learn to reflect on the past and present and to build
the future with imagination.
The study of literature and language is therefore a vital entitlement for every
child.
Mastery of language empowers the learner and is essential for independent learning,
the world of work and most other aspects of everyday life. |

Therefore, a high emphasis is placed
on reading at Caterham and it is taught from the Early Years through
to Year 6.
At the Key Stage 1 level, all children use the Jolly
Phonics scheme. Whilst the technical skill of reading can be mastered
early in a child's school career, at Caterham it is considered
essential to nurture that skill with enjoyment and to further children's
understanding of more sophisticated texts as they move through
the school.
There is a large, airy library which is fully stocked
with books for every level of reading ability.

Greater strides can be made when learning
is fun, and every effort is made to enliven the English curriculum.
The school's annual BOOK WEEK is always a huge success, with
book focused activities, which have included Character
Costume Days and visits from children's authors. In addition, children
have the opportunity to participate in annual visiting workshops as well as enjoying trips to the
theatre.
Older pupils also make their own contributions to the stage, with annual performances of popular productions, such as
‘The Pied Piper’.
