At Caterham history is a living subject. We are housed in buildings that have their own tales to tell,
including being narrowly missed by a German bomber during the Blitz. The prehistoric Harestone, a massive geological
import from far away, from which this valley takes its name, stands beside the main driveway of the school.
Who brought it here, where did it come from and how did those early people move it here?
The school’s location enables each year from Year 1 to Year 6 to take part in exciting visits to places of historical interest, relevant to the topic being studied.
History comes alive at such places as Fishbourne Roman Villa and Penshurst Place |

As well as the chronological study of this subject pupils are able to investigate Historiography,
the study of history. We consider the reliance placed on historical evidence, for example what it
is that determines whether an artefact is primary or secondary evidence
Children leave the Prep school well placed to take their places in the senior school history department which offers a very popular and over-subscribed subject option to older pupils.
