Mathematics is one of the core curriculum subjects and as such receives a high profile at Caterham. The aspects of Number, Shape and Space, Data Handling and the Using and Applying of Mathematics are taught throughout the school age range. These aspects are also used in other areas of the curriculum to enhance their learning.

We consider it essential that children gain a firm understanding of number; so much emphasis is placed on number activities and games from an early age. The learning of tables and number bonds provide children with the basis to tackle the four rules of number. Children are taught informal methods of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, so they have a comprehensive understanding of the mathematical mechanics of the process, before the formal methods are introduced and then applied to problem solving.

In lessons, mental strategies are systematically taught to aid solving the number problems, along with the learning of mathematical facts. These are developed in complexity as the children progress through the school, resulting children with a high degree of mathematical mental confidence. The children are taught in mixed ability groups until they reach Year 5 when they are set according to their abilities.
