At Caterham, children are encouraged to learn about the scientific world through experimentation and practical work, as well as in the classroom.

From reception they are encouraged to use the beautiful surroundings to learn about plant growth and animal life, going on bug hunts and walks to look at the bluebell woods.

Outings to places such as Ladyland Farm, The Observatory Science Centre at Herstmonceux, and a residential trip to the Isle of Wight enhance science learning for our children, and bring classwork to life.

Close links with the Senior School science department allow the children to experience science at high levels, both when visiting the labs at the senior school, and during science assemblies.

Studying plant life in meadowland habitats

During their time at Caterham children will study electricity, magnetism, sound, light and colour, materials and their properties, and planets and space amongst other things.

The children will be given the tools to challenge present scientific thinking, and to relate what they have learned to the world around them - to understand how science affects their lives. In this way all children are encouraged to reach their potential with confidence.
